Neutron Physics Laboratory
NPL is a part of the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, in order to perform neutron physics experiments according to its research programme as well as to provide experimental facilities and research experience for external users. Research activities of the neutron physicists of NPL are concentrated at the medium power reactor LVR-15 (10 MW mean power) which belongs to the neighbouring Nuclear Research Institute, plc. (NRI, plc). The NRI, plc. operates the reactor LVR-15on a commercial basis.
The reactor operates on average about 170 days per year. A pattern of operating cycles of three weeks, each followed by a period of about one week for maintenance and instrumentation development, has been established.
NPL operates 8 instruments installed at 5 radial horizontal beam tubes (for experiments in nuclear physics, solid state physics and materials research) and two vertical irradiation channels (for neutron activation analysis) hired at NRI, plc. For details see the following links:
